May Day rally in Union Square, NYC. After the passing of the Arizona 1070 tensions were higher than normal. Many immigrant rights groups were involved, roughly 150-250 people attended.
This week the U.S. Department of Justice filed a law suit against Arizona's immigration law because it interferes with the federal government's constitutional authority to set and enforce immigration policy.
The immigration law was initially strongly supported by the resident's of Arizona state lead by their Republican Governor Jan Brewer.
The lawsuit was filed in the federal court of Phoenix stating that the law, due to take effect July 29, usurps the federal government's "pre-eminent authority" under the constitution to regulate immigration.
Some civil-rights activists allege that the new law echo the 'Jim Crow laws' once practised in the USA to discriminate against African-Americans. The power to arrest anyone that looks like an immigrant will certainly promote prejudice against the Hispanic community in Arizona and could cause a nightmarish domino effect across America.
