Politicians from parties both left and right and a number of independent candidates hit the streets to Tokyo and Yokohama to spread their message and campaign in the lead-up to the house of councilors or upper house election that takes place on July 11th. This election for control of the Upper House is widely seen as a referendum on the year in office of the ruling DPJ or Democratic Party of Japan. The DPJ currently control the Upper House and will be hoping to maintain a majority there if the wide-ranging reforms planned are to pass easily through the legislative process and be enacted. The main opposition LDP or Liberal Democratic Party are hoping to wrest power back and limit the reforms by controlling the Upper House.
