Eid ul-Fitr often abbreviated to Eid, is a Muslim holiday that marks the end of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting (sawm). Eid is an Arabic word meaning "festivity", while Fiṭr means "break-fasting"; and so the holiday symbolizes the celebration of break-fasting after completing the fasting of the entire month of Ramadan (calendar month), The first day of Eid, therfore, is the first day of the month that comes after Ramadan which is Shawwal.

A million people leave Dhaka city each year and head home to celebrate Eid ul-Fitr with their family. Most transport carry passengers over capacity for their mode of transport, and also demand extra fare for the privilege.

The Bangladesh government announced not to use transport roofs of any kind, to avoid any kind of accident and potential crash, but passengers still sit on train and ship roof to their destinations.

One of train passenger Kamal Hussain said " We know that sitting on train roof is illegal, but we have no choice left because of the ticket crises and lack of transport management ".
