UCI BMX Supercross World Cup, USA Olympic Training Center, Chula Vista
The third round of the UCI BMX Supercross World Cup was presented by Swatch at the USA Olympic Training Center with Elite BMX riders from twenty-one countries. Rock & Roll was the theme of the event. Chula Vista, USA. 17-18/09/2010
A photo finish earned Nicholas Long, USA, first place in the third round of the UCI BMX Supercross World Cup, with Sam Willoughby, Australia, second place, and 2008 Olympic Champion, Maris Stombergs, Latvia, third place. In the women's competition, 2009 UCI BMX Supercross World Cup Champion, Laetitia Le Corguille, France, came in first place, with team mate, Magalie Pottier, France, second place, and nineteen year old, Alise Post, USA, earning a third place on the winner's podium.
Merle Van Bethem, Netherlands, and Lauren Reynolds, Australia, crashed in a women's qualifying race. Lauren Reynolds was able to walk from the track. Merle Van Betham was transported by medical helicopter to San Diego Scripps Mercy Hospital. Tyler Brown, USA, broke his left ankle in a men's qualifying race. The BMX track at the Olympic Training Center, Chula Vista, is identical to the course used in the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Rock & Roll was the theme of the event and the Voodoo Glow Skulls performed during intermission before the final races of the evening. Mike Redman, BMX and Olympic Announcer interviewed, Stephen Murray, Pro Dirt Jumper, and three time Gold Medalist, paralized from the shoulders down in an accident during BMX Dirt Finals, Dew Tour 2007, Baltimore, USA. Stephen's, "Stay Strong Foundation," was set up to help provide awareness and financial support.Stephen is an inspiration to all with his message: "When you think there is nothing left, reach within and dig deeper. "Believe in yourself." "Stay Strong."
Representatives from UCI, (Union Cycliste Internationale), USA Cycling, ABA, (American Bicycle Association), and Swatch, presented the awards to the winning BMX riders at the podium. Custom Washburn Guitars were presented to first place finishers, Nicholas Long, USA, and Laetitia Le Corguille, France. All top three finishers were presented a trophy, flowers, Champagne, and a Swatch Watch by the sponsor of the UCI BMX Supercross World Cup.
The champagne was for traditional celebration spraying only - no alcohol is allowed at the Olympic Training Center, one of only three in the USA. The 2010 UCI BMX Supercross World Cup opened in Madrid, Spain, the second event was held in Copenhagan, Denmark, with the Chula Vista, USA event at the Olympic Training Center for the third round, finishing in Frejus, France on October 8th & 9th, 2010.
