After the US invasion of Iraq, 150,000 Iraqis crossed in to Egypt seeking safety and shelter according to Human Rights Watch. They live in various suburbs oft 6th of October city and Faisl street. Cairo, Egypt 17/01/2010. The Iraqi community in Egypt try to keep their traditions and customs opening Iraqi restaurants, cafes and bakeries.
"Belad Al-Rafedeen" is small bakery at the seventh district in 6th October city where many Iraqis live. It used to sell different kinds of traditional breadcalled "Samon" and "Khobz". "Kobz" is made in a special oven called "Tanour", a circle- like shaped oven and it needs special and experienced bakers.
"Samon" and "Khobz" attracts many Egyptians and Arabs living in 6th October. Iraqi restaurants also serve traditional meals as "Beryany" and "Qozy" etc.
Some of Iraqi restaurants are specialized in fish meals. "Abu Nawas Fishes" restaurant serve a special dish called "Maskouf". It's a dish of big-sized fish known in Iraq by "Kar" fishes. The restaurant chef grill the fish after adding some lemon and salt
