The first protesters march in the streets of Madrid Wednesday morning as unions call for a general strike in the country protesting the government's austerity measures. Madrid, Spain, 29/09/2010
Rallies started in Madrid Wednesday as the countries unions called for a general strike to protest austerity measures imposed by the Spanish government.
The first protesters were in the streets at 10H00 local time shouting anti-government slogans and carrying placards.
A group of cyclists also joined the rally in downtown Madrid.
Many commuters had to walk to work or wait longer at stations as strikes severely disrupted the public transport system. Garbage was left uncollected and the countries main dailies were missing from newspaper stands.
