Led by labor unions and the left, an estimated half million people marched from Place d'Italie to Place des Invalides in Paris today, against the government's raising of the minimum retirement age. The protest was part of a series of nationwide protests, boycotts and strikes against a raise of the retirement age from 60 to 62 and 65 to 67 for full pensions. Also included in the protests have been the recent presence of many student unions and high schools, with some small scale violence occurring in the suburbs and other towns outside of Paris. The totals for march, according to event organizers, is said to have been 3.5 million. Paris, France 10.19.2010
