Protesters gathered outside Pioneer Square courthouse to demonstrate against former Assistant General Jay Bybee who was the primary author of legal memos justifying torture in warfare. Portland, OR, USA, 11/11/2010.
Between 2001 and 2003 Bybee served as Assistant Attorney General in the U.S. Department of Justice's Office of Legal Counsel. Presently he acts as a Federal Judge sitting on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.
Reports by the International Committee of the Red Cross compiled together with information form Department of Justice memos brought to light the brutal torture techniques employed in Iraq and Afghanistan and of course in Guantanamo Bay.
The protesters want to see Judge Bybee impeached for his involvement. On August 1st 2002 a memo justifying and authorizing acts of torture by the CIA was signed by Bybee.
One recent hearing of the House Judiciary Committee raised interesting points with representative of New York's 8th Congressional District Jerry Nadler saying, "During a recent Committee interview, answers provided by Judge Bybee made very clear that detainee interrogations were not conducted within the 'four corners' of the advice provided by the Office of Legal Counsel, and that the close relationship between John Yoo and the administration warrants further investigation."
