The Mayor of Katzrin in the Golan Heights Sami Bar-Lev says that 2000 Israelis have moved to his town in the past year, 23000 Israelis live in all of the Golan, and he wants his town to grow to 25000 inhabitants. Golan Heights, Israel. 29/12/2010
Many Israelis are moving to the Golan Heights with 2000 having arrived in the Town of Katzrin in the past year and the town has grown from 6000 to 8000, a dramatic increase considering all of the Israeli population in the Golan is only 23000.
Mayor of Katzrin 68 year old Sami Bar-lev says that he is building and creating jobs for 25000 in his town alone. Mr Bar-lev says that what attracts young Israeli families to the Golan these days is the global financial crisis and the expensive living in central Israel and ideology.
Standing in front of the ancient Jewish synagogue Mr Bar-Lev says that Jews have lived here 2000 years ago and that this city and synagogue where destroyed by a massive earthquake 1700 years ago, he believes that Jewish history of the Golan will keep it a part of Israel forever and that the Governments latest decision not to give away parts of Israel without a peoples pole will insure that.
The industrial zone of Katzrin houses the Golan winery, and other factory`s including the biggest Israeli mineral water company "Mei Eden"(water of Eden) that provides jobs for the Jewish and Druze that live side by side in the Golan Heights.
