A group of around a hundred students braved the rain today to march from Trafalgar Square to the Liberal Democrats HQ in Cowley Street, London.
They wanted to wish Nick Clegg a happy birthday and to show him and the coalition government that,
“In this new year, the war is not over, this is a taste of what is coming in 2011”, one drenched student told me. “We want to remind the government that we won’t go quietly”
Some wore party hats, blew plastic whistles and blowout squawkers, there was a party atmosphere. Some carried gifts for the Deputy Prime Minister humourously consisting of different types of kettles.
At Cowley Street they were met by police behind a barrier who would not let them pass any further. Here leaders spoke to the crowd about the various occupations occurring at their universities.
They then sang the traditional Happy Birthday song a few times.
A couple of the students asked the police at the barrier if they could present the gifts to the front door of the LibDem HQ hoping Nick Clegg would accept them. There were personal messages on each kettle, warning of actions to come. The police allowed this as members of FIT (Forward Intelligence Team) recorded them on video and digital camera.
After they returned to the crowd, there was one last declaration of marches and actions to come and the crowd peacefully dispersed towards Westminster tube, whilst being shadowed by officers who kept their distance.
