Police guarded Parliament en masse as hundreds of students marched from Piccadilly Circus in order to demonstrate against plans to scrap the Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA). London, UK, 19/01/2011.
Police guarded Parliament en masse as hundreds of students marched from Piccadilly Circus in order to demonstrate against plans to scrap the Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA). Not only were the Houses of Parliament guarded with barriers and numerous police lines - many side streets were also filled with police vans with police waiting to mobilise should anything kick off. Buildings such as the Ministry of Defence were also closely guarded.
In Parliament Square, the road was closed off, and a van complete with DJ and sound system played thumping music, creating a carnival like atmosphere.
As it turned out, the demonstration was entirely peaceful and by 1900 hours people began to head home.
EMA's comprise of weekly payments between £10 to £30 and are provided to 16-18 year old's who live in households earning under £30,800 per annum in order to keep them in education.
