Funeral Procession for Toronto Police Service Sgt. Ryan Russell.
The funeral for Sgt. Ryan Russell of the Toronto Police Service was held on January 18, 2001. An estimated 12 000 to 15 000 police officers, firefighters and paramedics from all over North America came to show their respects. They lined the downtown streets before marching to the funeral ceremony, held at the Toronto Metro Convention Centre. The public, including children whose parents kept them out of school for the day stood by the roadside and watched, some of them clearly saddened by the event.
Sgt. Russell was was killed on January 12th, 2011 when he was run down by a man who was erratically driving a stolen snow plough, and by witness accounts attempting to run people and vehicles off of the road. The suspect, Richard Esber Kachkar, was shot and arrested on the scene. He has since been released from hospital and has been charged with First Degree murder and multiple counts of Attempted Murder.
The incident caused shock, as Sgt Russell was the first Toronto Police Service officer to be killed in the line of duty since 2002. The official cause of death has been ruled “Vehicular assault “.
