Club Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles defeated the Los Angeles Galaxy in the San Diego Clasico, an international soccer (football) "friendly" at the University of San Diego's Torero Stadium. The game, which drew over 6000 fans from the San Diego and Tijuana region, saw the two teams play to a 2-2 tie in regulation. Tijuana then outscored Los Angeles 4-3 in penalty kicks.
Tijuana scored first at the 38 minute mark when Armando Pulido slipped behind Galaxy goalie Donovan Ricketts and found the back of the net. Los Angeles scored an equalizer two minutes later when Omar Gonzalez headed a David Beckham corner kick past the Tijuana goalie Zermeño Adrian. In the second half Landon Donovan took advantage of a Tijuana miscue in front of the net to put LA up 2-1 at 74 minutes. However a Galaxy infraction in the box gave Tijuana a penalty kick, which Luis Orozco netted for the final goal in regulation time.
Los Angeles was forced to go with its backup goalie, Josh Saunders, for much of the second half and the penalty kick phase after starter Ricketts went down in a collision with a Tijuana player.
