The opening ceremony of the 13th Thessaloniki Documentary Festival featured the international premiere of Israeli director Roy Sher's film "My Sweet Canary", a biopic - travelogue about famous Greek-Jewish rembetiko singer-dancer Roza Eskenazi, who started her career in Thessaloniki.

A vocal troupe of singers with traditional percussion instruments performed songs made famous by Eskenazi. The ceremony was hailed by newly elected Thessaloniki mayor Giannis Boutaris, a firm proponent of rediscovering Thessaloniki's multicultural past.
