However, the reason for the Secretary-General's visit to Bulgaria is the "Sofia Platform - Conference on Transition in Central and Eastern Europe and Changes in the Middle East". The conference takes place 5. to 6. May, and is about the recent changes in the Middle East. 150 participants from Europe, North Africa and the US are discussing what lessons countries in the Middle East could learn from the transition period in Eastern Europe 1989/1990.
