$154 Million Broughton Hospital Plan will Replace Historic Buildings
24 Historic buildings will be demolished to make room for a new 430,000 square foot Broughton Hospital mental health facility. The McCampbell, Morrison and Hoey buildings were built in 1924.
Broughton Hospital has been a psychiatric hospital in Morganton NC for 134 years. Built from 1877 to 1886 and Dr. Pepper, a physician was admitted as the first patient in 1883. Five to six generations of Morganton, NC residents have worked at Broughton Hospital, all with stories and memories. Some of the stories are their own personal experience, some were told by a parent, grandparent, co worker or neighbor. The destruction of the well constructed and designed Broughton buildings is like seeing the home you grew up in or the school you attended being destroyed. Morganton residents have a facebook page http://www.facebook.com/pages/Save-Broughton-Hospital/118989834806515 to try to save the old buildings.
The old buildings were built before air conditioning, ceiling had to be modified later to run AC.
The NC Department of Health and Human Services hired Freelon Design and Technology as the architectural firm for the new hospital design . The details and design may be seen at http://www.freelon.com/portfolio/169.
Questions remain as to what will happen to the steam plant after the new building is completed and without the steam plant how will the 500,000 Sq Ft Avery building built 134 years ago be heated?
The steam plant or old power plant runs three shifts and employees eleven workers.
Will and can the State of NC heat a 500,000 Sq. Ft vacant building? Will the people of Morganton and NC find a use to justify saving this historic building?
