Mass demonstrations were held nationwide in protest against the current administration. Nineteen people were killed over the course of two days and numerous others were reported injured or arrested. Blantyre. 20th July 2011
On July 20, 2011, thousands of pro-democracy supporters took to the streets of downtown Blantyre to participate in a demonstration organized by civil society groups. The demonstrations, which were held nationwide, began peacefully in the country's commercial capital, with song and dance characterizing most of the morning.
The protests were organized due to growing frustrations over severe fuel, forex, electricity, and water shortages and controversial government policies.
The government's violent reaction to the protests resulted in a total of nineteen deaths, and activists and organizers of the demonstrations have gone into hiding.
