Riots that had previously been limited to areas of London spread to other regions of the UK with rioting and arson taking place in the St Pauls and Stokes Croft areas of Bristol. United Kingdom. 9th August 2011
Riots that had previously been limited to areas of London have now spread to other regions of the UK. In the late hours of Monday (08/08/2011) a large group of people (approx. 100-200) attempted to enter Bristol's popular Cabot Circus shopping district located close to the centre of the city. It appears the Police and private security managed to prevent any serious incidents from occurring, however the group then turned it's attentions to nearby St Paul's.
The mob broke into smaller highly mobile groups continually moving through the area damaging property and vehicles. The area they covered expanded to include Stokes Croft (Bristol's self titled "Cultural Quarter", setting fires and causing further damage to local businesses. Many more people joined the activity while local riot police, aided by a helicopter and road blocks, attempted to prevent the rioters from settling into a single area for too long and possibly merging into much larger groups.
The damage caused by the group included further attacks on the Tesco Express located on Stokes Croft, the focus of much local resentment and the flashpoint for a previous riot in the area earlier this year.
