Europe Festival in Hamburg

Eight days before the European elections Hamburg held the “Europafestival 09”. The youth organisations of the 4 main parties and several youth clubs had called the joint festival. The festival was initiated by “Junge Europäische Förderalisten (JEF) Landesverband Hamburg e.V.” A camera team from the NDR network was on scene from the beginning of the construction of the festival. One after another the candidates arrived, amongst which were Birgit Schnieber-Jastram (CDU) and Knut Fleckenstein (SPD), as well as Danial Ilkhanipour (SPD Hamburg-Eimsbüttel) a candidate for the local Bundestag elections. Knut Fleckenstein greeted everyone including the camera team with high-fives. On one of the stages there was a diverse programme which included performances from little known bands and talks with the European politicians and the officials of the youth organisations of the main parties. The event was moderated by a Hamburgian comedian Sebastian Schnoy. The highlight of the festival was the Luftballon-Aktion (ballon action). The idea was to attach cards with the inscription “ I am voting Europe, because…” to the Europe-ballons, but many were let go into the blue sky with out the attached messages. This underlined a already rather pityfull event. Measured by the number of young German voters present (18-34 year olds) only a small percentage felt connected or spoken to by the festival. Hope remains that more voters come out for the vote on the 7th of June than in the vote in 2004.

8 Tage vor der Europawahl hat in Hamburg das Europafestival 09 stattgefunden.
Die Jugendorganisationen der 4 großen Parteien und einige Jugendverbände haben zu einem gemeinsamen Festival aufgerufen. Initiator des Festivals waren die Jungen Europäischen Förderalisten (JEF) Landesverband Hamburg e.V.
Bereits während des Aufbaus war ein Kamerateam des NDR vor Ort. Nach und nach trafen die Europakandidaten Birgit Schnieber-Jastram (CDU) und Knut Fleckenstein (SPD) und andere Politiker ein, u.a. Danial Ilkhanipour der Direktkandidat für Bundestagswahl (SPD Hamburg-Eimsbüttel). Knut Fleckenstein begrüßte alle per Handschlag, auch das Kamerateam.
Auf einer der Bühnen auf dem Spielbudenplatz in Hamburg gab es ein wechselndes Programm, Auftritte von eher weniger bekannten Bands und Gespräche mit den Europapolitikern in der ersten Runde und den Landesvorsitzenden der Jugendorganisationen der Parteien zu fortgeschrittener Stunde. Moderiert wurde die Veranstaltung von dem Hamburger Comedian Sebastian Schnoy. Höhepunkt des Festivals war die Luftballon-Aktion. Die Idee war, Karten mit dem Aufdruck “Ich wähle Europa, weil…” an die Europa-Luftballone zuhängen, jedoch stiegen die meisten ohne diese Botschaft in den strahlend blauen Himmel.
Unterm Strich eine eher traurige Veranstaltung. Gemessen an der Anzahl von den jüngeren deutschen Wahlberechtigten (18 – 34 Jahre), fühlte sich nur ein kleiner Bruchteil von ca. 100 potentiellen Wählern von der Veranstaltung angesprochen. Es ist zu hoffen, dass sich bei der Wahl am 7. Juni mehr Wähler als in Jahre 2004 zur Wahlurne begeben.
