70 years ago French swear to liberate France in a Libyan oasis - Arles
Plaque in Arles on Avenue Maréchal Leclerc commemorating the oath made in the Libyan oasis by the then Colonel Leclrerc to keep fighting until the French flag flew once more on the Strasburg cathedral. France. 29th July 2011
In a forgotten episode of history a leader of the de Gaulle's free French made an oath - in a small oasis of Kufra or Koufra in Libya which he had just captured from the Italians- to keep fighting until France was liberated.
It offers a mirror image to the current Lybyan rebels who were first able to receive international support in France.
