In the southern part of Iran in the area around The Persian Gulf, many women not only cover their hair with the burka, but they also cover their faces with colorful masks.
The tradition of the masks originated before Islam came to Iran (around 650 A.D.).
The niqab originated with the need for protection in the harsh desert conditions of Arabia, but in this area, in the Hormuzgan Province, people have made the masks a part of the traditional Islamic dresscode (hejab).
Nowadays the mask are mostly found in the villages.
Most women have at least two masks. One for for everyday use and one for celebrations, weddings etc.
30-40 years ago the women only wore black masks, but now this has also become a subject for fashion.
