About 1,500 demonstrators against a planned English Defence League march, held a protest meeting under the name United East End at Whitechapel Road. London, UK. 3rd September 2011

The protest started at 11am with addresses by the organisers as well as Lutfur Rahman, the Mayor of Tower Hamlets who addressed the assembled protesters on a raised platform at the corner of Vallance Road with Whitechapel Road. He later did a few interviews with local and international media.

The Home Secretary had approved the Metropolitan Police’s application to ban all marches in certain areas of London (including Tower Hamlets) for a period of 30 days starting from 2 September which the Mayor Lutfur Rahman, had campaigned and welcomed the EDL march banned

Police officers where clearly visible from Bethnal Green, Whitechapel and Aldgate stations with a pen assembled outside the Blind Begger pub in Whitechapel.

Later on in the afternoon, the protest groups held a counter protest numbering 1,500 at around Aldgate station. Police officers created a large buffer zone between the two separate demonstrations in Whitechapel Rd with officers on foot as well as mounted police.
