An estimated 1,000 English Defense League supporters assembled near Aldgate Tube were contained by police officers at Aldgate High Street. London, UK. 3rd September 2011
Police estimated at least 1,000 English Defence League (EDL) supporters assembled near Aldgate underground station, where EDL founder Stephen Lennon addresses the demonstrators present, in breach of bail conditions.
The Home Secretary had approved the Metropolitan Police’s application to ban all marches in certain areas of London (including Tower Hamlets) for a period of 30 days starting from 2 September.
The EDL "static" demonstration came after the home secretary, Theresa May, banned the group from marching in Tower Hamlets on police advice.
Riot police, mounted police and dogs turned out on the streets alongside police vans from forces as far away as Cumbria, Lancashire and Grampian to contain and lead the EDL protesters throughTower Bridge and away from Tower Hamlets.
There were seven arrests during the protest for offences including assault on a police officer, common assault, being drunk and disorderly and affray.
