The fruit traders in Surabaya prefer to sell imported fruit, because better quality and cheaper prices than local fruit. Surabaya, Indonesia. 11th September 2011

The fruit traders (wholesalers and retailers) in a number of locations in Surabaya admitted that they mostly sell imported fruit rather than a local fruit as occurs in the modern marketplace. They claimed that at least 70 percent of the fruit they sell is imported fruit. The traders are trying to receive the fruits of local fruit. But most local fruit which is agricultural product did not meet the standards required by consumers, they are forced to choose fruit imports.
Fruit imports from China from time to time continued to experience tremendous surge. Spikes occurred most noticeably for pears and mandarin oranges. Free trade AC-FTA (ASEAN-CHINA Free Trade Agreement) which started complaining in the business world in this country as a trigger for increased invasion of Chinese products to Indonesia.
In addition to low prices, easy fruit imports from China on sale also caused abundant supply. Fruits from China almost every moment can be obtained easily as without the season.
Cheap prices for the general population is the main attraction is very strong. Availability of supplies of fruit imports from China is more secure partly due to the country's curtain already have production area of fruits and vegetables that are adequate, both in the area and planting technology. As a result they can produce fruits and vegetables continuously throughout the year without having hampered weather problems.
While in Indonesia the production of fruits in some areas is often hampered due to unfavorable weather in addition to our state also do not have a special area which is used as granaries fruit production. Of course this condition makes the supply of local fruits is not guaranteed at all times.
Indonesia Government launched the "Joy Indonesia Fruit" to further increase the consumption of local fruit in the domestic market. Through the campaign was intended to increase domestic consumption of local fruit that has a quality not inferior to imported fruit. Through this program more and more people are also fond of local fruit in the middle of a flood of imported fruit. Launch the program, according to Indonesia Minister of Agriculture Suswono, will be followed by further steps such as improving quality, shortening the chain of fruit products and trade so that farmers get good price of fruit and consumers get affordable prices. Campaign "Joy Indonesia Fruit" conducted during 2011 - 2012, also aims at the implementation of Indonesia National Standard (SNI), the implementation of quality standards for fruit imports, encourage fiscal policy on local fruits Indonesia through the imposition of higher import duties for imported fruit. Encourage the government to fix the trade system and infrastructure of production and trade of fruit.
Although impressed too late, but the campaign of "Joy Indonesia Fruit" that deserves to be welcomed and inflamed around the country. Indonesia should campaign against the fruit has been going on since long and continued throughout the year, but the new government was doing this in 2011. Although impressed too late, but better than nothing. Given the rush of fruit imported from abroad are increasingly making local fruit products have a fit. How about no other than the taste that is always awake, diversity, packaging and quality of imported fruit proved better, so do not be surprised imported fruit always hunted people as seen in fruit markets. In addition to the campaign likes to local fruit consumption, the government should also campaign for the planting and cultivation of local fruit, not only in agricultural areas but also in urban communities through gardening activities which have become a hobby of certain people living in urban areas.
Given the challenges that are so heavily in product development faced by the local fruit that we deserve as many feared a popular fruit that people will disappear from the domestic market, due to a lack of concern for governments and society itself to the existence of local fruit.
