Members of the Communist Party of Ukraine mourned the victims of Babi Yar on the 70th Anniversary of the atrocities committed by the Nazis. Kiev, Ukraine. 29th September 2011.
Amidst a heavy rain this morning, members of the Communist Party of Ukraine mourned the victims of Bab Yar on the 70th Anniversary of the atrocities committed by the Nazis. On September 29 and 30, 1941, the German army, SS, and Gestaspo murdered 33,771 Jews in the Babi Yar ravine. Over the course of the 2 year German occupation of Kiev, thousands more were seized and taken to Babi Yar where they were shot. It is estimated that over 100,000 - 150,000 Jews, Soviet POWs, communists, Gypsies (Roma), Ukrainian nationalists, civilian hostages, partisans, mental patients, and others were murdered by the Nazis at Babi Yar.
Prior to the communist's memorial ceremony, a moment of silence was held throughout Ukraine for the victims of Babi Yar. From September 2, 2011 to October 11, 2011, there are 46 official events being held across Ukraine, which are dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the tragedy at Babi Yar as well as the millions executed by the Nazis during their occupation of Ukraine.
In light of the beginning of Rosh Hashanah (Jewish New Year), which is celebrated this year on 28 - 29 September, the main activities of the state leaders will be held on October 3, 2011.
