Legislative decrees that have been recently passed by the federal government threaten to open land in the Amazonian region of Peru to the foreign interests of mining, oil drilling and logging. Massive opposition has risen, particularly in Bagua, and has resulted in the death of many indigenous people and national police officers. Recently, congress has suspended the trade agreements, but it is reported that people continue to perish in the midst of this political conflict.
