Description:

About 600 union members, veterans, teachers, students and retirees gathered in Tampa's Gaslight Park and marched through Tampa's financial district and past the Federal Courthouse. Demonstrators touched on a wide range of subjects but focused primarily on economic and civil rights - the corrupting influence of corporate lobbyists, the role of money in elections, the recent Supreme Court rule equating Money with Speech, and the widening wealth gap between the "1%" and the "99%". Signs that that the political system is broken, that corporate power threatens democracy, and support for presidential candidate Ron Paul were also prominent. The mood was peaceful and celebratory. Organizers were careful to observe all traffic laws and to avoid antagonizing police. Upon advice from AFL-CIO lawyers, the attendees decided in a general meeting not to occupy the park and face arrest, but pledged to return and assemble again.
