Michael Douglas declares victory to a crowd of 1100

Academy Award winning actor Kirk Douglas spoke to 1,150 attendees at a
fund-raising reception and luncheon at the 10th Annual
Methodist Healthcare Foundation Cancer Center Luncheon today
at the Hotel Peabody in Memphis, TN.

In January of this year, Douglas announced he had won his battle with
advanced stage IV throat cancer after chemotherapy and radiation treatments.

Spanning over 30 years, Douglas has an extensive acting career in theatre, film, and television. He has portrayed a wide range of characters and starred in numerous box office hits including Wall Street, The American President, Fatal Attraction, Basic Instinct, and Romancing the Stone. Douglas branched out into independent feature film production in 1975 with the Academy-Award-winning One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest which won five Academy Awards. It was produced by his film production company, Big Stick Productions. Douglas went on to produce The China Syndrome which the National Board of Review named one of the best films of the year. In the late 1970’s Douglas resumed his acting career starring in Coma and The Star Chamber. In 1988 Douglas formed Stonebridge Entertainment which produced Flatliners, The Rainmaker based on John Grisham’s best-selling novel, as well as Face Off.

Douglas is a champion of social and environmental causes. He has been especially active in working with the United Nations (UN) and was named a UN Messenger of Peace by UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan in 1998. His two areas of focus are nuclear abolition and the prevention of small arms proliferation.

In 2009, the American Film Institute awarded him the Lifetime Achievement Award, the same award presented to his father, celebrated actor Kirk Douglas over 18 years ago.

He is married to Academy Award-winning actress Catherine Zeta-Jones. The couple has one son, Dylan, and one daughter Carys. Douglas also has one son, Cameron, from a previous marriage.
