Protesters clash on the streets of Tehran, burning literature and hurling projectiles. The protest coincided with an official rally marking 30 years since the US embassy was stormed in 1979 during the Islamic revolution. Tehran, Iran. 4/11/2009.
30 years ago Iranian students scaled the walls of the U.S embassy in Tehran entering the building and then taking the inhabitants hostage. This was a spontaneous act which dissolved all diplomatic ties between what was then the revolutionary Islamic Republic of Iran.
The occasion is normally marked in Iran with blatant displays of anti-American sentiments, people take to the streets to shout anti-American slogans, to burn U.S flags and effigies of American politicians. This year however the protests also included a hangover of the Iranian elections defeat for the 'green' movement.
Students clash with police armed batons and sticks, they and other demonstrators are engulfed by tear gas.
