Congolese asylum seekers protested today outside the Home Office in London against the removal of asylum seekers to the Democratic Republic of Congo. They claim they face the prospect of imprisonment, violence and torture if they are returned. Protesters brandished a recent article from the Guardian newspaper headlined "Returned Asylum Seekers Claim They Have Been Tortured in Congo".
Many of the estimated 10,000 Congolese asylum seekers in the UK fear removal and persecution in the DR Congo. Protesters also claimed that Group 4 employees are guilty of beating people as they are removed.
The protesters handed a letter to Andrew Woodward, PA to Phil Woolas, the Minister of State in the Home Office with responsibility for Immigration.
