Despite the steady fall of rain, several hundred people gathered at the location where Alexandros Grigoropoulos, a 15 year old Greek boy, was gunned down by police in the Exarcheia district of central Athens on the 6th of December in 2008. The resulting riots in 2008 lasted for several months with every increasing violent clashes between police and protesters. Mass demonstrations are expected in Athens and other cities around Greece to mark the one year anniversary. The gathering at the memorial site on Saturday night was peaceful. However, later in the evening news reports stated that 161 people were detained by police during sporadic clashes in the Exarcheia area.
