During a gathering at Ghazi stadium in Kabul a large number of women residing in Kabul announced their support for Dr. Abdullah Abdullah in upcoming presidential elections 2009.
Born in Kabul, 1960 to a ethnic Tajik mother, whom is from the Pashtun, Kandahari, Durrani lineage. His father is an ethnic Pashtun.
He continued to study in the early years of the Soviet invasion and graduated from Kabul University Medical School in 1983. The war had reached the capital and Dr Abdullah left for Pakistan where he continued his practice in medicine to return to his country in 1986 seeking revenge on the Soviets for the devastation of Afghanistan. He had been a keen supporter of the resistance offering medical support, in 1986 upon the personal request of the mujahideen Commander Ahmed Shah Massoud the doctor served as Special Advisor and Chief Assistant to the Commander.
Following the defeat of the Soviets he served as the Director General in the Ministry of Defence in Kabul from 1993 until 1996 taking over leadership in the Commanders absence as Ahmed Shah Massoud travelled to Europe and the U.S trying to secure arms trading to fight elements of what later became the Taliban.
From 2001 Dr Abdullah served as Defence Minister for Hamid Karzai but after years of what he alleges is a corrupt government of drug kingpins he is determined to oust the President.
