They are going to have a good dinner tomorrow because, “That’s all we can do,” Walt explains, “We can’t do any presents this year. I don’t even think about that.” The rest of their family live in WA and OR and the Chase brothers can’t afford to make the trip this year. Work has been scarce for the brothers. They looked for jobs in the local paper last week and the only ad was for a managerial position in a skincare company. Jeff and Walt are construction workers. They say that when they do work, they just make enough money to get back to work the next day. The food bank volunteer who did the intake interview with Jeff says he explained how he is beyond grieving, he’s not even angry anymore, just numb. Walt’s grief is easier to see. His eyes seem on the verge of welling up throughout his visit to the food bank. The local lumber mill is closing at the end of the month, and even though they have contracts out, nothing will be coming in. “Its gonna get pretty rough the next few months,” Walt says.

Ralph and Mialeina Luciano visit a food bank in Missoula, MT, USA. Last year was the first time they hadn’t been able to make ends meet and needed assistance to feed their children. Volunteers have been re-packaging food donated by local restaurants. Missoula, MT, USA. 29/06/2008. Montana has been hit hard by the economic downturn. Visits to the Missoula Food Bank are up dramatically, as people affected by the downturn search for ways to get by. With four young children—and a baby girl due in 20 days—Ralph and Mialeina Luciano have many mouths to feed. This is the first year they haven’t been able to make ends meet and have needed assistance to cover the gap. One of the most important sources of assistance for the Lucianos is the Missoula Food Bank. Maxine Rice is one of the volunteers who make this service possible by repackaging food donated by local restaurants. Thanks to an increase in donations, the food bank is coping with larger numbers of people at its doors—for now.

The United Campaign Against Police Violence organized a demonstration to march to and kettle Scotland Yard as a response to the tactics used at the G20 protests, where Ian Tomlinson was killed after being assaulted by police. The idea came from the sisters of Sean Rigg, who died in police custody last August. The UCAPV said, “The police should be helping to rid our streets of violence – not adding to it. The breadth of support for the UCAPV shows that people from all backgrounds are no longer prepared to see civil liberties undermined and threatened by the very force which exists to protect us. We must ensure that public trust in the police is rebuilt, and that respect for human rights becomes a fundamental principle of modern policing.” Black balloons were released after the names of people who have died in police custody were read.

On April 1, as the world’s leaders sat down for talks at the G20 summit in London, protesters took to the streets here to voice concerns about the global economic system. The protesters dubbed it 'Financial Fool's Day,” with many denouncing bailouts and some even calling for an end to capitalism itself. When it was all over, numerous people had been arrested, several were sent to the hospital with injuries, including one police officer, and—while the details are still unclear—one man was dead, likely from a heart attack.
