Nobel Peace Prize laureates Jody Williams from the United States, Mairead Corrigan Maguire from Northern Ireland and Shirin Ebadi from Iran attend a public ceremony in honour of the Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama and the people of Tibet, in the northern Indian hill town of Dharamsala. Jodi Williams and Shirinn Ebadi in their speech expressed disappointment with President Obama's China policies and disregard for Human Rights violation in Tibet. Obama is the first U.S. president who declined to meet the the spiritual leader and Nobel Laureate on his recent trip to the U.S. In a press release by issued by eight former Nobel Laureates - Jody Williams, Shirin Ebadi, Mairead Corrigan Maguire, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Rigoberta Menchu Tum, Adolfo Perez Equivel, Betty Williams, Wangari Maathai said "We urge the Chinese government to take immediate and constructive steps to resolve the status of Tibet and end the oppressive policies that continue to marginalize and impoverish Tibetans in their own land. By implementing laws that are enshrined in the Chinese constitution for a legitimate and meaningful autonomy for all Tibetans, the Chinese government will make great strides in securing peace and unity in their country."
The event ‘Peace Jam Youth Conference’ was initiated by the Dalai Lama, an international education program to encourage Nobel Laureates and the youth to engage in a dialogue on peace.
