Health groups in the Philippines lead by Consumers Action for Empowerment (CAE) protest in front of the Pfizer office in Makati, the country's business capital to protest against the monopoly of multinational drug companies in keeping the prices of medicines expensive and prohibitive.
Pfizer along with other leading drug companies operating in the country has been reported to have been influential in watering down provisions of the Republic Act 9502, or the "Universally Accessible Cheaper and Quality Medicines Act of 2008, passed a year ago.
According to critics, the law has been already weak at the onset to finally curb the prices of essential medicines and these MNC's have embarked in a vigorous lobby work to effectively make the law almost useless.
The Philippines belongs to the list of countries with the most expensive drugs and within its region is next to Japan in terms of drug pricing.
