Efforts are under way to increase awareness to the dangers of the coastal areas in Portugal after an accident in Algarve which resulted in 5 beachgoers being crushed by falling debris from the cliff.
Even though signs had been erected under the cliff to warn beach goers that the area was dangerous to pass under they are largely ignored as many people take the risk to pass under the cliff side. But the problem is not just in the Algarve but along the 800 quilometers of portuguese coast.
From the village of Azenhas do Mar, near Sintra, on the outskirts of Lisbon, perched on a cliff that tourists like to photograph paradisiacal beaches like Sao Juliao, Praia Grande (a surfers spot and a dinosaur trail that no one can visit now) or Ribeira d’Ilhas, in Ericeira, an internationally known surfing destination, the Portuguese coast is tumbling down.
After the accident in Algarve authorities started to inspect beaches all along the Portuguese coast, looking for dangerous spots. The beach season is almost over now but the tumbling down of some “dangerous spots” has begun, as if demolishing the cliffs is the answer to all the problems. But soon workers will go home, all will be forgotten and only the usual, old battered signs of danger will stand along the coast. So next year everybody will go back to the beaches, and look for new shadows under cliffs that are prone to landslide without warning.
