Riots on Temple Mount for Maimonides Anniversary
Riots erupted on Temple Mount, known by Muslims as the Haram al-Sharif (الحرم الشريف), when Jewish groups insisted on being admitted into the compound to commemorate the alleged visit of Maimonides (Rambam - arguably Judaism's most revered sage) to the site in 1165 CE.
The anger erupted into violence on the Mount itself - covered cursorily here by Haaretz.
Here, Muslim men pray outside the Bab el-Hadid entrance to the sanctuary, unable to enter the area, while Israeli military police, police and soldiers mass in the area.
Over the course of the day, police presence in the area augmented throughout the old city.
