The water shortage in Syria is now becoming a major issue, and it is said that in the arid climate of the Middle East, the lack of water will in the near future become the cause of a major conflict rather than oil or religion.
Syria has been suffering from a lack of adequate rainfall for a number of years, and with the Golan Heights occupied by Israel to the south and the flow of the rivers Khabor, Euphrates and Tigris controlled by Turkey to the north, Syrian farmers have been suffering. Wheat crops once a source of export revenue are now so low in harvest that they are having to be imported from elsewhere.

I hear that the Kurdish areas
I hear that the Kurdish areas have been particularly badly affected and people are trying to find work in the city as agriculture is suffering. Their other major industry - building construction - has been decimated by Decree 49, a law that only allows changes including new buildings, with the approval of the Government, which this not generally given to Kurds. It is effectively cleansing the Kurds from their historic homelands

Thanks-
Gebal Abyad (White Mountain) is close to Palmyra, if you remember the gorge through the mountain range as you drive to Palmyra from Damascus, just behind.
