Images taken at Sana'a bazaar during Ramadan, shortly following two car bomb attacks on the US Embassy. Sana'a, Yemen. 17/09/2008.
The US Embassy in Sana'a was attacked by two car bombs during Ramadan in September, 2008. I heard the explosion from my old city hotel and watched the smoke rise from its roof. I spent the day of the attack and days after exploring Sana'a bazaar, testing the limits of Yemeni hospitality. Like many other Muslims, Yemenis do a much better job of separating Americans from our government than we do separating them from theirs. As an American woman alone in the bazaar during a tense period, I experienced nothing but hospitality and openness from shoppers and stallholders, who were paying much more attention to their Iftar preparations than to geopolitics.
The day after the attack, a full color, 8x10 photo of me in a headscarf appeared on the cover of the national paper under the headline "Yemen is safe for Tourists."
