Views of daily life in the Bandiagara region which is comprised of small traditional villages surrounding the escarpment sandstone cliffs. Bandiagara, Mali. 27/02/2010.
Regarded today as the jewel of tourism in Mali, Pays Dogon are comprised of a series of traditional villages surrounding the Bandiagara escarpment. This fascinating region of sub-Saharan Africa has magnificent landscapes, beautiful dances and masks, exotic mosques, and villages carved in pink sandstone on the cliff side.
The escarpment, a sandstone cliff, rises about 500 meters above the lower sandy Gonodo plains to the south. Approximately 150 kilometers long and the highest peak rising 1,115 meters, the escarpment offers shelter to the Dogon people as well as a unique cultural tourism experience.
Pink and orange sand dunes can be seen at the bottom of the escarpment on the way to Indeli that has held on to its animist traditions more than any other Dogon village.
Onion fields, Baobab trees, fetishes, sacred crocodiles and red rocks are only some of the interesting attractions of the trekking through the Region.
