The Auxiliary Bishop of Madrid, Mons. Fidel Herráez, today, 5 April 2009, officiated at the blessing of the palms and olive branches on the occasion of Palm Sunday. He then proceeded on short procession with the congregation from the Monastery of the Encarnacion (Reincarnation) to the Cathedral of the Almudena. This short procession went past the Royal Palace, in the Plaza de Oriente, and then into the cathedral where the congregation attended a solemn holy mass.
Palm Sunday is the commemoration of Jesus of Nazareth, according to the gospels of the Catholic Church, entering Jerusalem to the cheers and adulation of the multitude. Traditionally Palm Sunday is the beginning of Easter week leading to Good Friday and then Easter Sunday. On Easter Sunday the Catholic Church celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Easter week is a very important Catholic festival in Spain with most cities, towns and cities commemorating the death and resurrection of Christ by organising processions or other pageants. Some processions are very basic whilst others elaborate events but all are solemn and can be very emotional for the congregation.
