Cardiff Pride 2008
As the organisers of the Cardiff Mardi Gras regroup after their year off to bring you Cardiff Mardi Gras 2009, we take a look back at the 2008 Cardiff Pride event. The event, which had to be held in conjunction with the Pulse nightclub Street Party due to Coopers Field being flooded, was still heralded a success by the organisers, and featured such names as BBC Wales' Chris Needs, 80's pop diva Sonia, with Atomic Kitten star Liz McClarnon rounding off the celebrity line up.
A number of local celebrities were also involved, as well as many of the "big name" drag queens who were as entertaining as ever. There was even a visit from "The Man from The Council", who was representing Cardiff City Council's "all inclusive" policies.
Given the success of the event, it is quite amazing that it was all put together in just six months. The Cardiff Pride management team - made of up Richard, Haydn, Paul, steve and Delme - held a public meeting on the 6th April 2008 to discuss options for the event. The event was organised as a temporary replacement for the traditional Cardiff Mardi Gras which was unable to go ahead in 2008.
The venue was chosen originally as Coopers Field, however due to the incredibly bad weather and consequent flooding, alternative venues had to be found at the last minute. Step forward Pulse nightclub, who incorporated the event into their Street Party weekend. Despite the bad weather, a good crowd turned up and seemed to enjoy the event immensely. Even more surprising was the sheer range of people - from tots to thirtysomethings, teenagers to grandmothers, this was truly an event that all the family could and did enjoy.
As things now look forward to the 2009 Mardi Gras, we say a heartfelt thank you to the organisers of 2008, and trust that the event will continue to go on from strength to strength.
