Yesterday three workers died in Saras refinery, Sardinia. The workers died inhaling toxic gases during cleaning a tank in a mild hydrocracking unit. The Saras refinery where the incident occurred is one of the biggest in Europe.
Italy has the worst record for workplace deaths in Europe. In 2009 the issue of security at work remains unresolved. Environmental work protection, one of the issues usually claimed in Italy during demonstrations of the Labour Day was also an issue of a national demonstration which took place in Rome last 4th of April. The demonstration was organised by CGIL Trade Union (one of three main Italian trade union confederation).
Today Saras refinery workers are on strike.
