Bob Hope, perennial Academy Award “loser,” finally got his “Oscar” today on board the USS Midway aircraft carrier in San Diego, California. The U.S. Postal Service presented the Bob Hope Commemorative stamp 6 years after his passing in 2003 at the age of 100.
Hope performed for troops aboard the USS Midway in 1972 and 1987. His family had requested that the dedication be held on the carrier, said Scott McGaugh, marketing director for the Midway.
His daughter Linda Hope and son Kelly Hope attended the presentation and First day of issues were available to the public. Also in attendance were David Faller, Executive Director of Stamp Services; RADM Mac McLaughlin, USN (ret.), the only president and CEO of the Midway Museum; Michael Daley, Vice President , Area Operations U.S.Postal Service; Jean Firstenberg, Chairwoman of the Postmaster General’s Citizen’s Stamp Advisory Committee and many other local and state celebrities.
In 1997, Bob Hope was the first person recognized by the U.S. Congress as an honorary veteran of the United States Armed Forces, even though he never served in the military.
All 100,000,000 stamps are available today.
