Kabul a city that enjoyed a ‘golden age’ of prosperity until the Soviet invasion of 1979, although the countryside of Afghanistan was far more devastated by Soviet aerial bombings and tanks the amassed weaponry after Soviet defeat led to the civil war. The waging factions marched to the city of Kabul where the new battle for Afghanistan was held. It was soon followed by the Taliban rule that came into power after the Afghan factions were too weary from decades of fighting.
The Olympic Stadium can be seen, which during the Taliban regime was the scene of public executions and flogging.
Ignoring the enormous numbers of foreign troops in the country Kabul citizens try to return to some state of normalcy that the youth have never been accustomed to. An elderly ice cream vendor, taxi drivers and a photography school can be seen.
Children now can attend mixed gender classes at school as they once did before the Taliban. Children enjoy kite running another activity that is a favourite national hobby but was also banned under the Taliban. A couple is seen going for a casual stroll in the park.
