Obama’s Honeymoon Over?
Barack Obama’s honeymoon period appears to be over, if scenes at a political rally in the Pakistan city of Peshawar are anything to go by. An effigy of the US president was paraded through town with a sign around its neck declaring “Obama Terrorist”. The effigy was beaten with shoes and finally thrown to the ground and trampled underfoot by the estimated 5000 strong crowd.
The demonstration was held by the religious Jamat-i-Islami party and began with a march along the Grand Trunk road in which participants walked or rode motorbikes, carrying placards declaring, “Go America Go” as well as the effigy of the President of the United States of America. The march reached Jinnah Park and after the crowd were led in prayer members of the party gave speeches demanding that US forces leave Iraq and Afghanistan as well as ceasing to interfere with Pakistani politics. The biggest cheer of the day was when Syed Munawar Hassan, the leader of Jamat-i-Islami, spoke and demanded that the unmanned drone attacks by US forces on Pakistani soil stop immediately.
It was at the end of this speech that the crowd threw the image of the president to the floor and trampled it underfoot. “We hate with all our hearts the cruel policies of the USA.” one spectator said.
