Thousands of Greeks took to the street this evening across the country in order to commemorate Polytechic Day, remembering the tragic events of the 17'th November 1973 when tanks smashed into the campus of the country's leading technical university in order to violently put down a student revolt against the country's military dictatorship.
In a mainly peaceful event thousands marched around Thessaloniki, Greece's second city to commemorate the Polytechnic uprisng which signalled the beginning of end of the military junta which ruled Greece from 1967 to 1974. Protesters also burnt an EU and American flag outside the American consulate.
Later in the night, there was widespread use of teargas by the police in the centre of the city, and the teargas could be smelled as far as the entrance of the city's port, where the annual Thessaloniki International Film Festival is currently taking place.
