Personal Statement
Born in Blantyre, Malawi, one of eight children, I was schooled in Zimbabwe and emigrated to South Africa in the early 1980s.
From an early age, I have had an interest in capturing events on “motion” camera, but four years ago, this changed in an instant whilst holidaying on the wild coast of South Africa. I took a few photographs with a friend’s digital camera and the “bug” bit deeply. Since my acquisition of a digital camera, I have covered music festivals, theatre productions, motorcycle enduro’s, 4x4 events…. to mention but a few. Photographing wildlife is a hobby whereby I find time to relax and re-charge my batteries.
Africa…wild and harsh yet romantic, has always been home, and whilst I have enjoyed visiting other continents, I missed my homeland and the peoples of Africa. Spectacular sunrises and romantic sunsets are a small part of Africa’s make up. It’s the people of the many differing cultures that make Africa what it is…home.
I try to depict my stories, the events and cultural issues, as they transpire, in photographs, using as few words as possible. One man’s culture may be seen as barbaric, unhealthy, or even disgusting, to another man’s eyes, yet I am not here to judge or evoke criticism, but merely to show and tell of Africa as it is. There are many in Africa who cannot read and write, so for them I hope the photographs tell their story and has meaning for those who live in distant lands.
