Personal Statement
Derek took up photography in his early 20's after receiving a gift of a camera. He set up a home darkroom and lived on chocolate and caffeine while teaching himself black and white printing.
A lack of natural light forced him to head for Australia for a year to learn to surf and use an SLR. Open his return to Ireland he studied photography at IADT where he developed his passion for street and documentary photography.
After graduating he spent a number of years living France. No waves in Paris so he took up roller blading as a way to get around and discover Paris. He moved back to Ireland in 2003 where roller blading is not socially acceptable unless you're under seven.
Derek has built up an impressive portfolio of commercial work, which includes commissions for corporations, local government, national press, University's, interior and web design agency's and semi state bodies.
Aside from his commercial work, Derek is commissioned on a regular basis by the local government to give lecturers and presentations to local photo groups. His work has been exhibited at the Guinness Storehouse and James Joyce House.
