I have but the simplest taste - I am always satisfied with the best. - Oscar Wild

PERSONAL STATEMENT:

Last year I was sitting in cafe in San Francisco with my friend Jacob Appelbaum. I had been taking photographs half heartedly for about two years but had no confidence that I could do it professionally. I told this to Jacob. He listened attentively and was quiet. After we left the cafe he took me to a photo store bought me 15 rolls of film and gave me one of his cameras - a Canon AE1 and said: "Listen Ingmar, if you want to be a writer you have write hundreds of pages, if you want to be programmer you have to code the same number and if you want to be a photographer you have to take thousands of images and you will get better." At that very moment I decided that no matter what it would take, I will be a photojournalist. I gave up my life in San Francisco, sold all my possessions and left everything behind. Since then incredible things have happened. I traveled around the whole world and learned from direct experience how to photograph. The core piece of my training happened in Nepal while interning at Rajdhani, national daily. Out on the streets of Kathmandu I found myself surrounded by the best Nepali photographers and international journalists and soon started publishing my work throughout Nepal, India and numerous web publications. Taking the risk of leaving the comfortable life behind has opened countless new opportunities for me to work in my dream profession. What one girl in Vietnam said to me perfectly sums it up:" When you loose something you get something".

I currently work for a small magazine called CHINAsia Update: http://sites.google.com/site/chinasiaupdate/
and continue my travels as a freelance journalist. Still so much left to learn and see.

Hey Ingmar, are you coming to Berlin for the Berlinale?

Renee

Hey, Your words touched me!!! I admire your courage of giving up comfortable life to pursue what you want. You deserve your dream profession. Life is fare, you are now harvesting the fruit of your great effort. Wish you all the best!

Ach, Mensch! I got your message late but I also work all day in a market selling my photos.. Believe it or not, braving the sub-zero temperatures and snow is not bad, pays more than the photojournalism to sell pics to tourists.. :) more on that later, it would have been cool to catch the "Pirates without Pants", I even read about that on brazilian news!
